Carrie's War

Apollo Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London

Carrie's War is based on the classic 1973 children's novel by Nina Bawden, which has delighted young and old alike since its publication.

Set during World War Two, Carrie's War centres on two young evacuees, Carrie and Nick Willow, who are billeted to the mining valleys in Wales with old Mr Evans and his kind sister Lou. At Christmas, they are sent to Druid's Bottom to collect a goose from Mrs Gotobed where they meet Hepzibah the witch and eccentric Mister Johnny, and hear about the curse of an ancient skull.

Carrie's War, which was written in 1973, is based on Bawden's own childhood experiences as an evacuee in Wales during the war. The story has twice been adapted for television. This stage production at the Apollo theatre was previously seen at Sadler's Wells over Christmas 2006.

Adapted by Emma Reeves, Carrie's War stars Sarah Edwardson in the role of Carrie, plus esteemed actress Prunella Scales (Fawlty Towers, After Henry) as Mrs Gotobed.
