The House Of Bernarda Alba

Almeida Theatre, Almeida Street, London

Lorca's The House Of Bernarda Alba is relocated to Iran in this new production at the Almeida theatre, which features the British stage debut of Iranian stage and screen star Shohreh Aghdashloo.

She plays Bernarda Alba, a powerful matriarch who, following her husband's funeral in rural Iran, decrees that she and her five daughters will enter a period of eight years' mourning. The only one likely to escape this fate is eldest daughter Angustias, who is already engaged to the village's most eligible bachelor. In the strict confines of the house, jealousy and suppressed sexuality rise to the surface. As Bernarda's oppression of her daughters increases, it is more than the girls' liberty that is in danger.

Aghdashloo has film credits including House Of Sand And Fog, The Stoning Of Soraya M and X-Men: The Last Stand, as well as US television appearances on 24, ER and Will & Grace.

Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca's other plays include Yerma and Blood Wedding, which was staged at the Almeida theatre in 2005.
