Sweeney Todd

Adelphi Theatre, Strand, London

Michael Ball plays the demon barber of Fleet Street, Sweeney Todd, in this musical tale of terrifying trims and repugnant pies.

Set in the grubby side streets of London town, master tunesmith Stephen Sondheim tells the terrifying story of the horrendous hairdresser Sweeney Todd’s quest for justice and retribution after years of false imprisonment. He is helped on his bloodthirsty journey to avenge the wrongs done to him and his family by local pie-shop owner Mrs Lovett, played by the inimitable Imelda Staunton.

Playing the role of Sweeney Todd takes the more usually family friendly Ball into a much darker area. The former star of Les Misérables and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was last seen in the West End giving an Olivier Award-winning performance in Hairspray.

Staunton’s previous London appearances include Into The Woods, Entertaining Mr Sloane and Guys And Dolls. She is best known for her film roles, which include Vera Drake and the Harry Potter series of films.

Prior to its run at London’s Adelphi theatre, Sweeney Todd was staged at Chichester Festival theatre.

Sweeney Todd is suitable for theatregoers aged 12 and older.

Sweeney Todd is presented in the West End by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited on behalf of Music Theatre International of New York.
