Damon Albarn’s modern opera Dr Dee mixes pop vocals with 16th century period instruments.
Dr Dee, though fairly anonymous today, was a key advisor to Elizabeth I and a quintessential Renaissance Man with interests ranging from astrology to alchemy and physics to philosophy. His thirst for knowledge also led him towards the occult, an obsession which brought about his downfall when, conned by a medium, he fell towards disgrace and sexual scandal.
Dr Dee, which was first seen at the 2011 Manchester International Festival, brings together former Blur and Gorillaz front man Albarn and acclaimed director Rufus Norris.
