The great American folk opera The Gershwins’ Porgy And Bess is performed by Cape Town Opera, marking 75 years since George Gershwin’s untimely death.
Shifted in time from South Carolina of the 1920s to apartheid era Soweto, The Gershwins’ Porgy And Bess is set in the teeming black community of Catfish Row, where crippled beggar Porgy desperately tries to save Bess from both a violent lover and a sleazy dope-dealer.
Among the songs in the famous score of The Gershwins’ Porgy And Bess are Summertime and It Ain’t Necessarily So.
