Alphabetical Order is set in a provincial newspaper office in the 1970s. It's another day of chaos in the cuttings library: files all over the floor, phones left ringing. And where is Lucy, the librarian? Her life - when she finally arrives - and the lives of the journalists who take refuge in her muddled retreat, turn out to be as confused as the library itself. Into this comfortable little world steps Leslie, Lucy's new assistant. She's young, bright and she wants system and order. She wants things to change.

Alphabetical Order is inspired by playwright Michael Frayn's own years as a young reporter for the Manchester Guardian, where his career began 50 years ago. Frayn went on to become a highly successful playwright, whose work includes Donkeys' Years, Noises Off, Make And Break, Benefactors, Copenhagen, Democracy and Afterlife. Alphabetical Order premiered at Hampstead theatre in 1975 in a hit production that transferred to the West End.

In honour of that first, highly successful production, and in recognition of Frayn's close association with Hampstead theatre over the years, Alphabetical Order is revived in a new production as part of the theatre's 50th anniversary season.

Alphabetical Order is directed by Christopher Luscombe, who recently directed The Merry Wives Of Windsor at Shakespeare's Globe and Alan Bennett's Enjoy at the Gielgud.
