War Horse is the National Theatre’s Laurence Olivier Award-winning World War I-set family drama.
War Horse is set at the outbreak of World War I, when Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. He is soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.
The National Theatre's epic production, War Horse is based on the celebrated novel by the Children's Laureate (2003-05) Michael Morpurgo. Actors working with striking life-sized puppets by the internationally renowned Handspring Puppet Company lead the audience on a gripping journey through history.
War Horse premiered at the National Theatre in 2007, going on to win the 2008 Laurence Olivier Awards for Set Design and Choreography. Due to popular demand it was revived on the South Bank in 2008, before transferring to the New London theatre.
National Theatre Associate Directors Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris direct War Horse. Elliott’s other credits include the acclaimed productions of Saint Joan, Pillars Of the Community and Harper Regan. Formerly the Artistic Director of the BAC, Morris’s other credits include A Matter Of Life And Death and Every Good Boy Deserves Favour.
War Horse is suitable for theatregoers aged 12 and older.
