Following the sell-out success of Three Sisters (bite07) and Twelfth Night (bite06), Cheek by Jowl’s acclaimed Russian ensemble returns for a third year with this startlingly modern epic.
Pushkin’s lyrical masterpiece is a gripping exposé of the seductive appeal of power and the terrible price that must be paid for it. Money, corruption, sex and blood thicken this sinuous and radical play, which was inspired by Shakespeare’s histories.
The ensemble features actors from Three Sisters and Twelfth Night, including Irina Grineva (Masha) and Igor Yasulovitch (Feste), Russian star Evgeny Mironov, with Alexander Feklistov (Vershinin and Sir Toby Belch) in the title role.
In Russian with English surtitles.
