The Young Vic production of Kafka’s Monkey is the latest stage show to be made available for download by Digital Theatre.
Kafka’s tale of forced assimilation into an alien culture, adapted by Colin Teevan for the Young Vic last March, starred Kathryn Hunter as an ape-man imprisoned in a cage and desperate to escape. Gradually the ape reveals his rise through the ranks of the beasts to become a walking, talking, spitting, smoking, hard-drinking man of the stage.
Kafka’s Monkey becomes the fourth stage production to be released for download by pioneering company Digital Theatre, which was launched earlier this year with the aim of filming and producing live theatre productions for users to download at a cost of £8.99.
Working with its initial partners the Young Vic, Almeida theatre, Royal Court, English Touring Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company, Digital Theatre has so far provided downloads of ETT’s Far From The Madding Crowd, the Young Vic’s The Container and the Almeida’s Parlour Song.
All four 2009 productions are now available to download at www.digitaltheatre.com.
