Theatre fans will be able to watch televised highlights from the star-studded Olivier Awards with MasterCard on ITV following 2013's ceremony, which will be broadcast live by BBC Radio 2.
Leading the evening’s proceedings on stage will be double Olivier Award-winning actress Sheridan Smith who will co-host the ceremony with an as unannounced fellow star of the theatre world. It has been confirmed, however, that the Legally Blonde The Musical and Hedda Gabler star will be joined by another double Olivier Award winner, Julia McKenzie, who will provide this year’s Awards voiceover.
The 37th Olivier Awards with MasterCard will take place on 28 April at Covent Garden’s stunning Royal Opera House where BBC Radio 2 presenter Ken Bruce will keep theatre fans abreast of all the latest news as it happens, broadcasting from 18:00 to cover all the action from the red carpet arrivals to the winner’s speeches.
Shortly after the ceremony finishes, ITV will broadcast a special highlights programme offering theatre fans the chance to relive the winner’s speeches, watch the exclusive performances from the ceremony and witness the glamour of London theatre’s most important and prestigious annual event.
Theatre fans who want to get even closer to the action will also have the opportunity to purchase public tickets to the event with MasterCard or attend the Covent Garden piazza event which returns for 2013. Presented by BBC Radio 2, the free piazza event invites the public to gather in Covent Garden for special live performances from top London shows before watching a live relay of the glittering ceremony on big screens.
The Olivier Awards 2013 with MasterCard kicked off earlier this week when Elaine Paige announced voting was open for the only publicly voted award, the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award. As well as allowing theatre fans the chance to decide which long-running show should take home the coveted accolade, everyone who votes will be entered into a prize draw to win tickets to attend the awards.
Voting for the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award will close on 18 March and the four shortlisted shows will be announced alongside all the other 2013 Olivier Award nominees at an exclusive industry event at the Mayfair Hotel on 26 March. For the first time ever, this exciting occasion will be broadcast live from 11:30 on BBC Radio 2. The Royal Shakespeare’s Company’s Matilda The Musical, which won a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards at last year’s ceremony, will also perform at the nominations event to celebrate.
