Publications & Reports

The Society of London Theatre produces a range of publications, including The Official London Theatre Guide and The Theatre List, where you can find detailed information about current and future West End productions.

SOLT also produces annual Box Office Data Reports, which give vital information about the health of London's Theatreland, year-on-year. The 1998 Wyndham Report and the 2003/04 Audience Survey provide a deeper analysis of trends in the West End. Summaries of the reports are available to read below.

The Official London Theatre Guide

The Official London Theatre Guide was established in 1922 and now has a nationwide circulation of 145,500. Published fortnightly, it includes listings of current productions, information on new productions, a Theatreland map and other useful information for theatregoers. It is distributed free of charge in the UK and abroad through arts, tourist and travel networks. In central London, copies are available in all theatres and in the tkts booth in Leicester Square.

Every issue of the Official London Theatre Guide is archived by the Society of London Theatre, serving as a comprehensive and fascinating history of theatre in the capital since 1922. View a selection of the archived guides here.

The Theatre List

The Theatre List is published twice a month and includes comprehensive information about current and future theatre events, along with contact details for theatre managements as well as PR and marketing details. Of particular value to national and regional newspapers, magazines, broadcasters and group organisers, as well as committed theatregoing members of the public, The Theatre List is available by subscription only. Current annual rates are £45 UK, £55 Europe and £75 World.

The summer 2009 brochure lists over 120 audio-described, captioned and sign language interpreted performances taking place in May, June, July and August, including children's theatre, drama, musicals and opera. The Box Office Data Report

The Box Office Data Report is published annually. Researched and written by Richard Andrews of Performance Report, it provides detailed information on attendances and audience trends for the previous year, including seasonal variations. The Box Office Data Report is essential reading for theatre investors, producers, marketing managers and box offices, as well as the academic sector.

The Box Office Data Report 2008

The Box Office Data Report 2008 will be published in full in spring 2009. Preliminary figures for 2008 have already been released, with attendances confirmed as 1% up on 2007, making last year another record-breaking year for London's Theatreland. View a graph of attendances since 1986.


The West End Theatre Audience Report (2003/4)

The result of a major qualitative research project by MORI into the exact profile of current theatre audiences. As well as giving invaluable demographic data, the report examines such topics as media consumption, transport, associated spending and booking preferences in theatre audiences, and will be of interest to producers, theatre managers, marketing personnel and the academic sector.

The Wyndham Report

The Wyndham Report (1998) was commissioned by The Society of London Theatre, researched by MORI and written by Tony Travers of The London School of Economics. The brief for the report was to provide a detailed analysis of the effect of the London theatre industry on the nation's economy. The report reveals the West End theatre industry as an economic powerhouse, bolstering the UK economy with thousands of jobs and millions of pounds of tourist and industry spending, whilst creating significant tax yields and a major balance of payments surplus.
