Meet the team

Background:

I’ve been working at Official London Theatre since time began (or since 2002, depending on your definition of time… and began). Before plying my trade in the bright lights of the West End, I started writing about theatre while at university in Bristol, flitting between the Hippodrome, the Old Vic, the Arnolfini, the Tobacco Factory and occasionally studying English too.

Favourite production:

Such a tough question, so I’ll give three answers that are all National Theatre shows: Anything Goes, The Pillowman and War Horse. The first was pure, unfiltered joy, the second as darkly humorous as it’s possible to be, and the third just jaw-droppingly stunning and surprising.

Official London Theatre top tip:

As a dad I’d have to say check out the Family Theatre section and sign up to the Family Bulletin. If I’m honest, I was taken a little by surprise by how heart-swellingly pleasurable it is to see my kids enjoy theatre as much as me; the family section is a great resource to find out about the shows that will make all of us grin like Cheshire cats.

I’d see anything…

…starring Dame Jenna Russell. What do you mean she’s not a Dame? Can we deal with that please?

Background:

I studied English & Philosophy at the University of Liverpool where I began writing; mostly terrible short stories and music reviews. After a misspent youth in the Pleasance Courtyard in Edinburgh and a stint as a sub-editor on the festival newspaper ThreeWeeks, theatre officially won over gigs and I joined Official London Theatre in 2008.

Favourite production:

Jerusalem – Mark Rylance telling the story of meeting a giant using only a cigarette lighter was exhilarating. I felt like I’d held my breath for the whole three hours of the show. In more recent years, 1927's staggeringly inventive Golem was my personal highlight of 2014; pure theatrical brilliance.

Official London Theatre top tip:

Our First Night Features. Matt, Kate and I attend all the major London openings and these features are an easy, quick way to keep on top of new productions, as well as seeing what people are saying about the show on Twitter.

I’d see anything…

...by Complicite or Clean Break Theatre Company, written by Tennessee Williams or directed by Jeremy Herrin.

Background:

After graduating from the University of Exeter in summer 2011 and dabbling in everything from fashion writing to newspaper journalism, I made the 300-mile move from my home in rural Cornwall to the bright lights of London’s West End. I’ve been working for Official London Theatre ever since and I’ve never looked back, except to see my family… and friends… and cats.

Favourite production:

If we’re talking musicals, I’d have to say Once. Anything that combines a moving storyline, Irish céili, Oscar-winning music and an on-stage bar will always be a winner in my eyes. If we’re talking plays, Chimerica and The Nether are two of the most compelling dramas I’ve seen in recent years. If, however, we’re talking out-of-this-world immersive theatrical experiences, You Me Bum Bum Train is a ride that I will quite literally never forget!

Official London Theatre top tip:

For its sheer money-saving capabilities, it would have to be our TKTS booth in Leicester Square, where you can get discounted tickets for an array of shows playing in London. The staff there are friendly and helpful – they’ve won awards, you know – so you can get great advice on what to see and where to sit at the same time as grabbing yourself an absolute bargain.

I’d see anything…

…that has the names Rory Kinnear or Cush Jumbo even vaguely associated with it.

More about Official London Theatre

Run by the not-for-profit organisation Society of London Theatre (SOLT), Official London Theatre has strived to bring audiences closer to the world of theatres in London since 1922 and works directly with theatre producers to offer a unique insider’s view.

Official London Theatre brings you closer to London theatres, reaching the areas other sites can’t. We’re first to interview winners moments after they come off stage at the Olivier Awards with MasterCard. We’re first to fill you in on news of our hugely popular discount theatre tickets campaigns Kids Week and Get Into London Theatre. And we’re first with the low-down on our huge annual open air London theatre celebration West End LIVE.

We’ll also keep you up to date with TKTS – the Official London Theatre ticket booth – and our nationwide gift voucher scheme Theatre Tokens.

Most importantly, everything we do comes from a passion for London theatre. We love it and we want you to love it too. Any profit we make goes straight back into the industry, to fund audience development initiatives along with bursaries and awards to help support the theatremakers of the future.
