Centring on a life-long friendship tested by the introduction of love, The Pearl Fishers sees Bizet’s early operatic masterpiece beautifully brought to life through colourful orchestration, spectacular staging and a mesmerising underwater paradise.
Having survived a precarious and perilous life on a treacherous sea-shore in a Sri Lankan shanty town, Nadria and Zurga’s is a bond to last a lifetime – until the arrival of Leïla, that is. Their friendship might yet survive – but only if they are prepared to sacrifice all.
Exploring themes of desire, longing, loss and religious structures with a score wonderfully integrating evocative choruses and beautiful melodies, the ENO’s magnificent designs tell this moving tale of friendship and its durability under the strain of love.
