What is RSS?

Depending on who you talk to, RSS stands for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication. It is a format for syndicating news and the content of news sites. Once information is in RSS format, RSS-related software can check the feed for changes and display them.

How do I start using RSS feeds?

RSS feeds can be accessed in the following ways:

Via your Internet browser:

If you click on the button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways dependent on your chosen software, including:

1. Dragging the URL or logo of the RSS feed into your chosen reader or by simply cutting and pasting the news feed URL into your News Reader.

Some browsers, including Mozilla Firefox, Opera and the Macintosh Safari (OS X 10.4 and above), automatically pick up RSS feeds for you. Internet Explorer users can download “add-on” software. The soon to be released version 7 of Internet Explorer on the Windows XP platform will have "RSS aware" software built-in.

2. As an “add-on” to your email software client i.e. Outlook or Eudora.
3. Stand-alone software or aggregators - see below.
