What is RSS?
Depending on who you talk to, RSS stands for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication. It is a format for syndicating news and the content of news sites. Once information is in RSS format, RSS-related software can check the feed for changes and display them.
How do I start using RSS feeds?
RSS feeds can be accessed in the following ways:
Via your Internet browser:
If you click on the button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways dependent on your chosen software, including:
- Dragging the URL or logo of the RSS feed into your chosen reader or by simply cutting and pasting the news feed URL into your News Reader.
- As an “add-on” to your email software client i.e. Outlook or Eudora.
- Stand-alone software or aggregators - see below.
Some browsers, including Mozilla Firefox, Opera and the Macintosh Safari (OS X 10.4 and above), automatically pick up RSS feeds for you. Internet Explorer users can download “add-on” software. The soon to be released version 7 of Internet Explorer on the Windows XP platform will have "RSS aware" software built-in.
